Taking Pride in diversity
This year SABMiller sponsored Pride in London, the biggest LGBT+ festival in the UK, for the third time, but it was a first for our specially-designed 30-foot parade float.
LAGER (Lesbian and Gay and Everyone Respected) is our LGBT+ employee network. The network is inclusive and any employee is welcome to join, regardless of orientation.
Since its first meeting in September 2014, LAGER now has over 40 active members in the UK, with other markets across SABMiller looking at starting their own local networks, including Australia and South Africa.
Quentin Goodwin, Head of Commercial Management, set up the LAGER network and is its chairman. He is delighted with SABMiller’s ongoing involvement in Pride in London and says:
“The reception our float received at Pride was fantastic, and we are so proud to be continually more engaged with the wider LGBT+ community.
“We hope this sends a clear message, not only to our employees that it’s okay to be LGBT+, but also encouraging the wider business community to celebrate and embrace diversity in all its forms.
“The benefit of allowing people to bring their whole self to work is not just making people feel comfortable, but also encouraging them to reach their full potential.”
Ahead of the parade, LAGER members held a number of events for our UK employees, including a workshop to make colourful lei worn by Pride attendees and handed out to the crowd, and sharing selfies as part of Pride’s #nofilter campaign – showing colleagues as their authentic selves.
“Our overriding vision is for the principles of diversity and inclusion to be considered so normal in SABMiller, and other company cultures, that LGBT+ employees no longer require a support group. We are laying down the challenge to the beer industry to match our efforts in this space.”
